Open Question: Can I still become a teacher with a criminal record including multiple felonies, but no violent crimes?
I want to become a high school math teacher, but about a year ago I got into some trouble with the law. I have no violent crimes on my record, but i received 3 felonies and a misdemeanor. The felonies include possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of a deadly weapon (brass knuckles). The misdemeanor is a receiving stolen property. I had a drug problem for about 4 years and have since cleaned up my act and attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings regularly to help maintain my sobriety. Will these convictions keep me from attaining my career goal in the state of California, or can they be worked with since none are violent crimes or strikes?
